April 21st, Waltham, MA, 2017; The latest location in the GPS stable, GPS Spain announced themselves to the soccer world with an impressive performance in the prestigious Mediterranean International Cup (MIC) earlier this month.
GPS Spain featured a core of players from Valencia-based club CD Atletico Museros and supplemented by GPS players from Massachusetts, Maine, Florida, Puerto Rico and California. The team was coached by Rafa Fernandez, Ivan Helguera (formerly of GPS MA) and Jorge Serrano, who have taken a key role in the development of GPS operations in Spain.
Competing in Category C, which featured European powerhouses Inter Milan, Manchester City, FC Porto and FC Barcelona. The team opened up with a 2-0 win against Sant Feliu (Spain) before a close 1-0 victory in game 2 versus Japanese outfit Masaki Sports Academy. The final and decisive group game was against Turkish side CTFA Stars and a 1-1 draw was enough to ensure progress to the knockout rounds of the event.
Lying in wait were the youth academy of professional side UE Llagostera was waiting for us with a quarter final against the mighty Atlético de Madrid the prize for the winners. Unfortunately after conceding an early goal, the GPS boys were unable to break their opponents down and exited the tournament with a 1-0 defeat. FC Barcelona went on to win the tournament defeating Celta de Vigo in the final.
The participation is another milestone in GPS operations in Spain. Earlier this year the club announced the development of an International Academy in Valencia. The Academy will welcome its first intake of athletes this fall, with over 18 players committed to attend. Additionally, GPS Spain is hosting a 3 week Summer Camp for players looking to immerse themselves in Spanish soccer and culture.
